NAVY CHAPLAIN CORPS
Answer the Call to Serve

Our nation’s sea services (Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard) consists of over 770,000 active duty and reserve service men and women, with an average age under 25. Our sea service men and women place their lives on the line daily in response to our country’s needs. Imagine the challenges they face and the sacrifices they make. The challenges and sacrifices also extend to the home, where the military spouse and children must continue to function with their loved one away from home. Our service men and women and their families greatly require the support guidance of a special group of leaders – our Navy’s Chaplain Corps.

As part of a team of 1,062 Active Duty and Reserve Navy Chaplains serving more than 100 different faith groups, you will also be a Naval Officer – meaning you hold a vitally important leadership role with the Navy and our country. The brave men and women who have answered the call to advance the cause of freedom are your congregation dotted all over the world. We are in dire need of religious/spiritual leaders who will also answer the call to serve alongside them at home, during combat, while performing humanitarian relief missions, along with providing much-needed ministry to their family.

The following two Chaplaincy programs are available:

1. Chaplain Candidate - If you are under the age of 38 and are currently pursuing or intend to pursue a graduate degree in theological or related studies of at least 72 semester hours of which at least 2/3 is in residence (can be waived with 4 units of CPE) from an accredited educational institution, you may qualify for the Navy Chaplain Candidate Program. You will earn a commission while in the process of earning your graduate degree and have an opportunity to see real Navy Chaplains at work. You will be exposed to the challenges and rewards of working in the diverse situations that the Navy has to offer. Students may have on-the-job training wherever Navy Chaplains serve - at sea, at home, or overseas. As a Chaplain Candidate, you will wear the uniform and will receive pay and benefits while on your annual training or job shadowing and not in school. You will truly get to experience what it is to serve as a Navy Chaplain, affecting the lives of the men and women of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard and their families.

2. Active Duty/Reserve Chaplain - If you have already completed the graduate degree detailed above and have sufficient ministry experience, you may qualify for Active Duty or Reserve Chaplaincy. Active Duty Chaplains serve full-time while Reserve Chaplains remain in their local community and serve on a part-time status (1 weekend drill per month, 12-14 days annual training per year, and mobilization opportunities throughout their service). Age requirement for Active Duty and Reserve Chaplaincy is less than 48. Age waivers will be considered for "exceptionally qualified" (education and experience) applicants age 48 and older.
